Adult Day Care for Plano Families Living With Memory Loss

If you live in Plano and care for a parent or spouse with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, Friends Place now has a center right here in Plano, at 4682 McDermott Road in west Plano. We are open 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM on weekdays, a licensed nurse is on duty every day, and a half day costs $80.

  • Dementia-focused day program, serving DFW families since 2005
  • Licensed nurse daily
  • One staff member for every five members
  • Hot lunch cooked on site
  • Three centers: Plano, Richardson and DeSoto

Plano is an older city than people assume. The Census Bureau’s 2024 American Community Survey counts 42,668 Plano residents aged 65 or older, 14.7% of the population, which is a higher share than Dallas, Frisco or McKinney. Many of their adult children are the ones juggling work calls and doctor visits, and many are trying to figure out what happens between 8 and 5 when Mom can no longer be home alone.

That is the gap we fill. Friends Place was founded in Richardson in 2005 for adults in the early and middle stages of memory loss, people who have outgrown a senior center but are nowhere near needing a nursing home. We still do only that, and our Plano center brings the same program closer to Collin County families.

Why Plano Families Choose Friends Place

Plano has senior programs, including the Sam Johnson Recreation Center for adults 50 and older, with its fitness rooms, classes and cafe. What a recreation center cannot do is supervise someone who forgets where they are, needs medication at noon, or gets anxious and heads for the door at 2 PM. That calls for a staffed, licensed day program designed around memory loss.

A few things make ours different from the general adult day programs you will find on a directory search:

  • Every member has a memory concern. Your mother spends the day with peers at a similar stage, not in a room where she is the only one struggling to follow the conversation.
  • The ratio is one to five. We hold that ratio all day, which is why we ask families to reserve days in advance.
  • A licensed nurse is on duty daily. Medications, blood pressure, glucose checks, and oxygen assistance happen on site.
  • We publish our prices. Many programs make you call for a quote. Ours are in the table below.

If you are comparing centers, our guide to what to look for in an adult day care center lists the questions worth asking on every tour, including ours.

Finding Our Plano Center

Friends Place Plano is at 4682 McDermott Road, Plano, TX 75024, in west Plano near Ohio Drive. Families in west and north Plano will usually find it the closest of our three centers, and it is an easy drive for families in Frisco, The Colony, Allen, and McKinney too. Get directions to our Plano center.

If you live in east or central Plano near US-75, our Richardson center at 1960 Nantucket Drive may be the shorter drive. Both centers run the same program, so choose the one that fits your commute.

Most Plano families drop off on the way to work and pick up on the way home. We open at 7:30 AM and close at 5:30 PM, so a parent can stay up to ten hours on a full day if your commute runs long.

Schedule a Tour of the Plano center and time the drive yourself.

Getting a Ride When You Cannot Drive

We do not provide transportation, so here is what Plano families actually use.

Plano Rides Senior Service. Launched in May 2026 and run for the city by Via, Plano Rides is for Plano residents 65 and older, booked through its app, its website or by phone at 972-210-0141. Because our Plano center is inside the city, it is a natural fit for trips to us. Call to ask about fares and how drop-off works for a rider with memory loss.

DART Paratransit. In February 2026, Plano approved a new agreement with DART under which DART continues paratransit service in the city. Plano and Richardson are both DART member cities. Paratransit is for riders who cannot use buses or trains on their own because of a physical, cognitive, or visual disability, which can include dementia, and DART decides eligibility through a free in-person assessment.

Either way, someone with moderate memory loss should not ride alone without a plan for the handoff at both ends. Share the ride’s scheduled times with us when you enroll.

What Fills Your Parent's Day

Members arrive to breakfast and a morning snack, then move through exercise (twice a day), word games, trivia, music and a daily sing-along. Lunch is a hot meal from our own kitchen, served from 12:30 to 1:30 in the dining room with linen napkins. Afternoons bring arts and crafts, therapy dog visits, intergenerational programs and live entertainment. Recliners and a quiet bedroom are there for anyone who needs rest.

Personal care is where many Plano families feel the biggest relief. Bathing a parent with dementia at home can turn into a daily fight. At the center, members can get showers, shaves, a shampoo and blow dry, nail care with a hand massage, and foot care with a leg massage, and licensed salon services are available too. Details are on our personal care services page.

Support for You, Not Only Your Parent

Plano has more caregiver support than most suburbs, and we encourage families to use it alongside our program.

  • The Wellness Center for Older Adults, a nonprofit inside the Sam Johnson Recreation Center on West 16th Street, offers health counseling and social services, and co-hosts Caregiver Conversations with the Plano Public Library.
  • Plano Public Library runs Memory Keepers, a virtual program for people with early-stage dementia and a family member or care partner.
  • Our own support groups in Richardson are free and open to the public: a ladies’ group on the first Wednesday of the month, an Alzheimer’s caregiver group on the second Thursday, and a men’s group on the third Thursday, each from 2:00 to 3:30 PM. Call to confirm this month’s dates.
  • Plano’s My Safety Call program places a daily phone call to homebound or older residents, which helps on days your parent is home alone.

What It Costs, With the Numbers

Item Richardson Center Price
Half day (5 hours or less) $80
Full day (over 5 hours) $100
One-time enrollment fee (screening and needs assessment) $65

Long-term care insurance covers adult day services under almost all policies, and we help families check benefits. Veterans referred by a VA physician can attend at no cost in most cases at our Richardson and DeSoto centers, which are contracted with the VA North Texas Health Care System. A small copay applies for some. For VA care at our Plano center, please call us for details. Our veterans page explains the referral.

Plano caregivers can also apply to the North Central Texas Area Agency on Aging, which serves Collin and Denton counties. Its caregiver program gives priority to people caring for someone with dementia and offers a respite voucher, with a standard one-time benefit of $800 that can be used over three months. Eligibility is based on where you or your parent lives. Ask NCTCOG whether the voucher can be applied to days with us.

Is Our Program a Good Fit?

We serve adults 50 and older who have memory loss or who fit in well with members who do. A diagnosis is not required, and people with Parkinson’s or mild cognitive impairment often do well here. Members need to walk on their own or with a walker, a cane or staff help, because the center is not set up for wheelchairs. If you are not sure, bring your parent for a short visit after your tour and our staff will give you an honest read.

Other Collin County Areas We Serve

Our Plano center sits in the middle of our northern service area. Families farther up US-75 can read about adult day care for Allen families and our McKinney page. Families along the Tollway have pages on adult day care near Frisco and The Colony. To the west, our Carrollton page covers the Bush Turnpike route.

Plano Rides serves Plano residents 65 and older, and our Plano center is inside the city. Call Plano Rides at 972-210-0141 to ask about booking regular trips, fares, and drop-off for a rider with memory loss.

Adult day care is regular, scheduled respite. You can reserve a half day or full day as often as you need, and staff can usually handle a same-day reservation.

Memory care usually means a residential community where your parent moves in. We are a day program: your parent comes for the day and sleeps at home. Many families use us for months or years before a move becomes necessary, and some never need one.

You tour first and complete an application. Then you bring your parent for a shorter second visit and a brief assessment, reserve days for the rest of the month, and pick a start date.

We would rather you see the program running than read about it. Tour our Plano center on a weekday, meet the nurse, and watch lunch.
