Grand Prairie Adult Day Care for a Parent With Dementia

Grand Prairie stretches across three counties, and that one fact shapes almost every part of arranging care for a parent with Alzheimer’s or another dementia here: which agency can help pay for respite, which Alzheimer’s Association chapter covers you, even which hospital is closest. Friends Place serves Grand Prairie families from our DeSoto center, a licensed adult day program built around memory loss, 17.4 miles from Grand Prairie City Hall and about 26 minutes by SH-161, I-20 and Belt Line Road. This page lays out what we offer and how the three-county map works.

  • Memory care day program
  • Licensed nurse on duty daily
  • 1:5 staff-to-member ratio
  • Meals cooked in our kitchen

Your County Decides Where to Call

The Texas State Historical Association describes Grand Prairie as sitting in western Dallas and eastern Tarrant counties, with part of the city in Ellis County as well. Each county is served by a different Area Agency on Aging, and each agency runs its own caregiver support and respite programs.

Your Grand Prairie address is in Area Agency on Aging Phone
Dallas County Dallas Area Agency on Aging (Community Council of Greater Dallas) 214-871-5065
Tarrant County Area Agency on Aging of Tarrant County (https://www.unitedwaytarrant.org/what-we-do/area-agency-aging-aaa), run by United Way of Tarrant County 817-258-8000
Ellis County North Central Texas Area Agency on Aging 800-272-3921

The Dallas agency’s caregiver support includes respite for unpaid caregivers of someone of any age with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. The Tarrant agency serves older adults, people with disabilities and caregivers through its Aging and Disability Resource Center. The North Central Texas agency gives priority to dementia caregivers and offers respite vouchers. If you are not sure which county you are in, your property tax statement or appraisal district record will say.

The Alzheimer’s Association splits the same way: its Dallas and Northeast Texas chapter covers Dallas County, and its North Central Texas chapter, based in Fort Worth, covers the Tarrant side. The 24/7 helpline, 800-272-3900, works for both.

Why Grand Prairie Families Come to DeSoto

When we looked in September 2026, we did not find an adult day program with a Grand Prairie address, and searches for dementia care in Grand Prairie lead mainly to residential memory care communities. That leaves families with a jump from “Mom is managing at home” straight to “Mom needs to move,” with nothing in between.

A day program is the in-between. Your parent spends weekdays with us, with a nurse on duty, staff trained in dementia care, meals, exercise and company, and sleeps at home every night.

The Route, and Why Belt Line Road Matters

From Grand Prairie City Hall on West Main Street, OpenStreetMap routing heads south on SH-161, along the President George Bush Turnpike for about three miles, east on I-20 for about a mile, then south on Belt Line Road (FM 1382) for about nine and a half miles, through Cedar Hill and into DeSoto. Our center sits on Belt Line. The full trip is 17.4 miles and about 26 minutes in light traffic. Families in southern Grand Prairie, toward Joe Pool Lake, will usually have a shorter drive.

Our DeSoto center is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Schedule a Tour and drive Belt Line once before you decide.

Transportation, Honestly

We do not provide transportation. Grand Prairie is not a DART member city, so DART Paratransit does not serve it. Ask the city about its own ride options, and confirm whether any of them reach DeSoto before you plan around one. Most Grand Prairie families drive or use private senior transportation. The Dallas agency’s care coordination can sometimes help eligible Dallas County residents 60 and older with transportation.

A Day in DeSoto

Members arrive to breakfast and a morning snack. Exercise happens twice a day; the DeSoto calendar has included chair exercise and yoga sessions. Lunch is hot, cooked on site from menus a licensed dietitian reviews, and served in the dining room. Afternoons bring music, trivia, crafts, a book club, therapy dogs and visiting performers. Members who tire can rest in a recliner or the bedroom.

Health Care During the Day

A licensed nurse is on duty at our DeSoto center every day we are open. For families in Grand Prairie, where we could not verify a hospital operating inside city limits and the nearest hospitals are in Arlington, Mansfield and southwest Dallas, a nurse on site during the day adds a real layer of safety. Our nurse:

  • gives medications or reminds members to take them,
  • checks blood pressure and tests glucose,
  • assists with oxygen and carries out ordered treatments,
  • tracks weight over time, and
  • supervises help with walking, transfers, toileting and incontinence care.

If a member feels unwell, they rest in the nurse’s office or our bedroom with staff beside them until family or paramedics arrive. The full scope is on our health care and wellness page. For routine primary care, Parkland’s E. Carlyle Smith Jr. Health Center on Conover Drive in Grand Prairie serves adults and seniors.

Cost and Coverage

Our DeSoto rate sheet starts at $75 for a reserved half day (five hours or less) and $95 for a reserved full day. Members who need more hands-on help with mobility, toileting or disease-related behaviors pay a higher daily rate, set after an assessment. Enrollment is a one-time $65. Current prices are on the DeSoto days, hours and costs page.

Almost all long-term care insurance policies cover adult day services. Our DeSoto center is contracted with the VA North Texas Health Care System, so eligible veterans referred by a VA physician usually attend at no cost, with a small copay in some cases; see our veterans page.

Caregiver Support Near Grand Prairie

The Alzheimer’s Association’s Dallas County list shows no caregiver group meeting in Grand Prairie. The closest on that list are a group in Irving and the one at our DeSoto center, which meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 2:00 PM, is sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association and is open to the community.

If your parent’s diagnosis is recent and the type of dementia is still unclear, our article on whether you need to know which dementia it is explains why the answer matters for care.

Who We Serve

Adults 50 and older with memory loss, or who fit well with a group that has it. A diagnosis is not required. Members need to walk on their own or with a walker, cane or staff help; we cannot accommodate wheelchairs. Days are booked by reservation.
