Adult Day Care for Oak Cliff Families, South of the Trinity

Oak Cliff has been part of Dallas since 1903, when its residents voted for annexation by eighteen votes. The Texas State Historical Association notes it kept much of its identity as a separate community. For a parent living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, that is where our DeSoto center is: a licensed adult day program for memory loss, about 20 minutes from the Bishop Arts District and under 20 from the Kiest Park area.

  • Specialized in memory loss
  • Licensed nurse on duty daily
  • One staff member for every five members
  • Meals cooked on site
  • VA North Texas contracted
  • DeSoto center open since 2012

Two Ways South From Oak Cliff

The Texas State Historical Association’s handbook places Oak Cliff on the south bank of the Trinity River, two miles from downtown, and Oak Cliff’s roads run naturally toward DeSoto. We measured two common starting points with OpenStreetMap routing, in light traffic.

From North Oak Cliff and Bishop Arts: take Zang Boulevard to I-35E south, pick up US-67 (the Marvin D. Love Freeway) for about five miles, then head south on Cockrell Hill Road for about three and a half miles to Belt Line Road. Total: 12.9 miles, about 20 minutes.

From the Kiest Park area: go south on Hampton Road to US-67, then Cockrell Hill Road south to Belt Line. Total: 9.4 miles, about 17 minutes.

From Wynnewood, Kessler Park, Winnetka Heights or Kiestwood, one of those two routes will usually be the shorter one. Our Richardson center is almost 30 minutes from Bishop Arts, so DeSoto is the center we recommend for Oak Cliff.

No Caregiver Group Meets in Oak Cliff. One Meets at Our Center.

This surprised us when we looked. The Alzheimer’s Association’s list of Dallas County caregiver support groups shows several in north Dallas and Uptown, but none meeting in Oak Cliff. The nearest on the list is the one we host at our DeSoto center on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 2:00 PM, sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association and open to anyone in the community. You do not need to be enrolled with us to come. The chapter’s support group list has the current schedule.

If you have never been to a support group and are not sure what to expect, our article on what really goes on in an Alzheimer’s support group meeting walks through a typical session.

What Your Parent's Day Looks Like at DeSoto

Our DeSoto calendar changes each month, and it is built to give members something to look forward to. A recent month included a watermelon party, a s’mores day, a birthday celebration, performances by visiting musicians, a movie day with snow cones, chair exercise, yoga, a story hour, and a Wednesday book club working through a novel.

Around those events, the daily rhythm stays steady, which people with dementia need:

  • Breakfast and a morning snack on arrival.
  • Exercise twice a day, plus music and a daily sing-along.
  • A hot lunch cooked in our kitchen from dietitian-reviewed menus.
  • Afternoon games, crafts, therapy dog visits and intergenerational programs.
  • Recliners and a bedroom for anyone who needs to rest.

The full range is on our recreational and therapeutic activities page.

Health Care Close to Home

A licensed nurse is on duty at our DeSoto center every day we are open, to give medications, check blood pressure and glucose, assist with oxygen, carry out treatments and track weight. Staff help with walking, transfers, toileting and incontinence care. Every staff member is background checked and certified in CPR and first aid.

Oak Cliff families already know the area’s hospitals: Methodist Dallas Medical Center on North Beckley Avenue, and Methodist Southwest Medical Center on West Wheatland Road, which was known as Methodist Charlton until it was renamed on August 1, 2026. UT Southwestern also runs an outpatient campus at RedBird on West Camp Wisdom Road. During the day, our nurse handles the routine health needs so you are not on call for them.

Cost at the DeSoto Center

Our DeSoto center’s rate sheet starts at $75 for a reserved half day of five hours or less and $95 for a reserved full day, with higher daily rates for members who need more hands-on help with walking, toileting or behaviors related to their disease. A one-time $65 enrollment fee covers screening and a needs assessment. Current rates are on our DeSoto days, hours and costs page.

Help with the cost is available. Almost all long-term care insurance policies cover adult day services. Our DeSoto center holds a VA North Texas contract, so eligible veterans referred by a VA physician usually attend at no cost, with a small copay in some cases; see our veterans page. Oak Cliff is in Dallas County, so caregivers can also ask the Dallas Area Agency on Aging (214-871-5065) about respite support

Getting Your Parent to DeSoto

We do not provide transportation. Oak Cliff is inside the city of Dallas, a DART member city, but DeSoto is not, so DART Paratransit should not be counted on for this trip. Most Oak Cliff families drive, often dropping off on the way to work. Our DeSoto center is open 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

Oak Cliff Resources for the Rest of the Week

  • Dallas Public Library memory kits. The North Oak Cliff branch on West Tenth Street and the Polk-Wisdom branch on Library Lane both lend Favorite Things memory kits, with fidgets, games and conversation starters made for people living with dementia and their care partners.
  • WellMed Charitable Foundation Senior Activity Center on West Camp Wisdom Road in Redbird is free for Dallas residents 60 and older and runs brain health and balance classes.
  • Dallas recreation centers in Oak Cliff, including Kidd Springs, Kiest, Beckley-Saner and Martin Weiss, host the city’s Active Senior Adult Program on weekday mornings, with fees waived for residents 60 and older.

Who Is a Good Fit

We serve adults 50 and older with memory loss, or who fit well among members who have it. A diagnosis is not required. Members must be able to walk on their own or with a walker, cane or staff help; the center is not set up for wheelchairs. Days are reserved in advance to keep our 1:5 ratio.
