Adult Day Care for Garland Families, 20 Minutes From Home

Garland’s main senior center at 600 West Avenue A is closed for renovation while the city builds a new one, and most of its programs have moved to the Fields Recreation Center on Dairy Road. For families whose parent relied on that routine, it has left a hole in the week. For families whose parent now has Alzheimer’s or another dementia, a senior center was never quite enough anyway. Our Richardson center is a licensed adult day program for memory loss, 9.8 miles from Garland City Hall and about 20 minutes away by surface streets.

  • Memory care day program since 2005
  • Licensed nurse on duty daily
  • 1:5 staffing
  • Meals cooked in our kitchen
  • VA North Texas contracted
  • Weekdays 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM

What Garland Searchers Find, and What They Need

Search “adult day care Garland TX” and most of the first page is directory listings. The one Garland center that ranks with its own site does not mention dementia and does not publish a price. Garland has several adult day providers, but the ones we found in September 2026 serve Medicaid clients, a specific language community or adults with intellectual disabilities. None said it runs a dementia program.

That matters for the 31,085 Garland residents aged 65 and older counted in the Census Bureau’s 2024 American Community Survey, 12.6% of the city. A parent with memory loss needs staff who expect confusion, repetition and restlessness, and who know how to redirect them without an argument. That is the only kind of program we run.

The Drive, Street by Street

From Garland City Hall on North 5th Street, OpenStreetMap routing takes you west on Belt Line Road, north on Garland Avenue, west on Arapaho Road, then Collins Boulevard and Campbell Road to our center on Nantucket Drive near Custer. It is 9.8 miles and about 20 minutes without freeway driving. From north Garland, near Firewheel, many families take the President George Bush Turnpike west instead.

We open at 7:30 AM and close at 5:30 PM, Monday through Friday. A full day runs up to ten and a half hours.

Getting There by DART Paratransit

Garland and Richardson are both DART member cities, so a trip from a Garland home to our center stays inside DART’s paratransit area. DART Paratransit serves people who cannot use a bus or train on their own because of a physical, cognitive or visual disability, and dementia can qualify. DART decides eligibility through a free in-person assessment; call 214-749-3278.

We do not provide transportation ourselves. The city’s senior van, which runs free weekday trips for residents 60 and older, only goes to Garland senior centers and to doctors inside Garland city limits, so it cannot bring your parent to Richardson.

Schedule a Tour and ask us how other families handle drop-off.

A Nurse on Site When Garland Has No General Hospital

The federal hospital list from CMS shows no general acute-care hospital with a Garland address. The closest are Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, Lake Pointe, on Scenic Drive in Rowlett, and Methodist Richardson Medical Center on the Bush Turnpike, not far from our center. That makes daytime health care matter more for Garland families, not less.

A licensed nurse is on duty at our center every day we are open. The nurse can give medications or remind members to take them, check blood pressure, test glucose, assist with oxygen, carry out treatments ordered by a physician, and track weight month to month. Staff help with walking, transfers and toileting, including incontinence care. When something seems off, we call you right away, and a member who feels unwell rests in the nurse’s office or our bedroom with staff beside them until family or paramedics arrive.

Lunch, and Everything Around It

Food is a quiet source of worry for many Garland caregivers. A parent living with dementia may skip meals, forget they already ate, or stop drinking water. At our center:

  • Every meal and snack is made on site, from menus a licensed dietitian reviews.
  • Members start the day with a continental breakfast and a morning snack.
  • Lunch is hot and served restaurant style from 12:30 to 1:30, with staff helping members who need prompts, cues or adaptive equipment.
  • Members with choking precautions are supervised at the table.
  • Water and juice are served at least three times a day.
  • Special diets and food allergies are handled in our own kitchen.

Our nutrition and dietary services page explains more.

The Rest of the Day

Exercise twice a day. A daily sing-along. Word games, trivia and mind fitness activities. Arts and crafts, therapy dogs, intergenerational programs and live entertainment. Members who prefer to help rather than join in are given jobs, and anyone who tires can rest in a recliner or the bedroom. Showers, shaves, hair care and nail care are available too.

Prices for Garland Families

Garland is largely in Dallas County, so most Garland caregivers can turn to the Dallas Area Agency on Aging (214-871-5065), whose caregiver support includes respite for unpaid caregivers of someone of any age with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. The small Collin County portion of Garland falls under the North Central Texas Area Agency on Aging instead.

Support in Garland and at Our Center

  • Carver Senior Center, 222 Carver Street, runs programs for adults 55 and older, with a lunch program and transportation.
  • The new Garland Senior Activity Center is in design, and the city posts updates on its senior centers page, along with its weekday senior meal program and the “Seniors in the Know” newsletter.
  • Our Richardson support groups are free and open to Garland caregivers: a ladies’ group on the first Wednesday of the month, an Alzheimer’s caregiver group on the second Thursday and a men’s group on the third Thursday, 2:00 to 3:30 PM.

If you are new to caregiving, our dementia caregiver guide covers the first practical steps.

Is Your Parent a Fit?

Members are 50 or older, living with memory loss or a good match for a group that is. A diagnosis is not required. Members need to walk on their own or with a walker, cane or staff help, because we cannot accommodate wheelchairs. We book by reservation to keep our ratio at one staff member for every five members.

Nearby Areas We Serve

South and west of Garland, our Dallas adult day care page compares both of our centers for Dallas neighborhoods. To the southeast, Mesquite families have their own page on the I-635 route.

Frequently Asked Questions

We did not find one when we checked in September 2026. Our Richardson center, about 20 minutes away, is the nearest dementia-focused program we run.

Both cities are DART members, so the trip is inside DART’s paratransit area. Your mother would need to qualify through DART’s free assessment.

$80 for a half day and $100 for a full day, plus a $65 enrollment fee. Meals are included.

Both offer company, meals and activities. We add supervision throughout the day, a licensed nurse and staff trained in dementia care, which a senior center is not built to provide.

Yes. We are contracted with the VA North Texas Health Care System, and eligible veterans referred by a VA physician usually attend at no cost.
