Dementia Day Care for The Colony, on the Shore of Lake Lewisville

The Colony’s senior center fills its week with music. Tuesdays bring Pickin’ & Grinnin’, Thursdays an acoustic jam, and there is bingo, quilting and a book club besides. It is a lively place for older adults who can come and go on their own. When a parent’s memory starts to fail, though, a few hours at a senior center stops being enough, and families start searching for adult day care in The Colony. When we checked in September 2026, no directory listed an adult day program inside The Colony. Our Richardson center, built for people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, is the nearest one we run: 15.3 miles from City Hall, about 27 minutes by the President George Bush Turnpike.

When the Senior Center Is Not Enough

The Colony Senior Center on Augusta Street serves adults 50 and older from 8 AM to 3 PM on weekdays. Its model works for people who can join an activity, follow a schedule and find their own way home. Dementia changes each of those. A parent may start losing track of the day, wander from a group, forget whether they ate, or need help in the restroom. Those are signs they need supervision, not just company.

A dementia day program keeps the parts that made the senior center good, the music, the games and the friends, and adds the parts that keep a person with memory loss safe: trained staff on hand all day, a licensed nurse, and a ratio of one staff member to every five members. Our day runs from 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM, long enough to cover a full workday.

Music, Conversation and Dignity

Since music is already part of senior life in The Colony, it may help to know it sits at the center of our day too. Members sing together every day, take part in music programs, and dance when live entertainers visit.

The way staff talk to members matters just as much. Our team is trained in dementia care techniques, including acceptance of behavior, reassurance, and cues and prompts that help a member do things for themselves. Our article on compassionate communication explains the approach in more depth.

Personal Care Your Parent May Resist at Home

For many families in The Colony, the hardest part of caregiving is not the forgetting. It is the shower. Bathing, shaving and hair care can become daily battles with a parent who no longer understands why they are needed. At our center, members can have showers, men’s shaves, a shampoo and blow dry, nail care with a hand and arm massage, and foot care with a foot and leg massage. Licensed salon services are available as well.

Handing this part of the day to trained staff can take the fight out of your mornings. See our personal care services page for the details.

The Route From The Colony

From City Hall on Main Street (FM 423), the fastest route heads south on FM 423 and Josey Lane, east along Plano Parkway and Midway Road to the President George Bush Turnpike, then east to Coit Road and over on Campbell Road to our center near Custer and Campbell. OpenStreetMap routing measures it at 15.3 miles and about 27 minutes with light traffic. The Turnpike is a toll road.

It is the longest drive of any city on our north side, so we suggest full days of up to ten and a half hours for $100, which keep round trips to one a day.

Transportation: What Exists and What Does Not

We do not provide transportation, and The Colony’s public options are limited.

  • DART does not serve The Colony, which is not a member city.
  • DCTA Access, the Denton County Transportation Authority’s paratransit service, is only for residents of Highland Village, Lewisville and Denton.
  • SPAN Transit, which The Colony’s city page lists for seniors, offers shared rides by appointment within Denton County. Our center is in Dallas County, so SPAN is unlikely to cover the trip. Ask SPAN directly if you want to be sure.

Most families in The Colony drive or use private senior transportation.

Health Care on Site

A licensed nurse is on duty every day we are open. The nurse gives or reminds about medications, checks blood pressure and glucose, assists with oxygen, performs treatments and tracks weight. No hospital has an address inside The Colony, so having a nurse watching your parent during the day matters. If something changes, we call you, and a member who feels unwell rests in the nurse’s office or the center’s bedroom with staff beside them.

Paying for Care From The Colony

A half day of five hours or less is $80, and a full day is $100. Enrollment is a one-time $65. Almost all long-term care insurance policies cover adult day services. Veterans referred by a VA physician usually attend at no cost under our VA North Texas contract; see our veterans page.

The Colony sits entirely in Denton County, so caregivers here work with the North Central Texas Area Agency on Aging (800-272-3921). Its caregiver program covers unpaid caregivers of someone of any age with Alzheimer’s or a related disorder, and its services include respite care.

Other Help in The Colony

The city's services for seniors page lists several supports worth knowing about:

SPAN lunches at the senior center at 11:30 AM, with a suggested $2 donation for those 60 and older, plus home-delivered meals for homebound seniors.

Next Steps, a crisis coaching service for residents of The Colony.

Chisholm Trail RSVP, a volunteer program for adults 55 and older, which can be a good outlet for a caregiver spouse.

Our support groups in Richardson are also open to you, free of charge, including a men's group and a ladies' group each month.

Who We Serve

We serve adults 50 and older with memory loss, or who fit well among members who have it. A diagnosis is not required. Members must be able to walk on their own or with a walker, a cane or staff help; the center does not accommodate wheelchairs.

Not necessarily. A senior center day and days with us can work side by side. Watch how she does with less supervision, and ask our staff what they notice after a few visits.

Mostly early and middle stages. Our nurse will meet your parent during a short assessment visit and give you an honest answer.
